OIS Becomes an Official Talent Whisperer School

Posted on April 17th 2026

As Optimist International School prepares for its next chapter — transitioning into Optimist International Academy and growing into a full 4–18 international learning pathway — becoming an official Talent Whisperer School marks a meaningful milestone in shaping the kind of learner-centred, strengths-based culture we want to carry with us into the future.

At Optimist International School, we believe that every child brings something unique into the world. Helping children discover, name and grow their strengths is deeply connected to who we are as a school — and it is why we are proud to share that OIS has now joined the growing network of Talent Whisperer Schools, marking our commitment to making children’s talents visible in everyday school life.

Over the past months, members of our teaching team have completed the Talent Whisperer training, and last week they proudly received their certificates.

The training journey was enriched by workshops hosted at OIS by both Luk Dewulf, founder of the Talent Whisperer philosophy, and Els Pronk, who has played an important role in bringing this work into educational practice in schools. Their sessions gave our team inspiring and practical insight into how recognising children’s natural talents can transform both learning and well-being.

Luk Dewulf’s philosophy begins with a simple but profound idea: talent is not about being the best at something. Talent is found in activities that come naturally, bring joy, make time fly, and give energy. As he explains, talent is not about what you do — it is about what that activity does with you.

For parents, that may sound different from the usual idea of talent. In Talent Whisperer practice, talent is not “being good at football” or “being strong at maths.” Instead, it is about inner qualities such as original thinking, noticing patterns, bringing positive energy, empathising with others, or naturally generating ideas. A child may, for example, be a natural “Idea Fountain” — someone who constantly comes up with creative possibilities — or a “Knowledge Sponge,” someone who absorbs and connects information with ease.

These talents are often visualised through strength cards used in Talent Whisperer conversations and training. They help adults and children recognise qualities that often remain unnoticed, and give language to strengths children may not yet see in themselves.

For children, this understanding can be life-changing. Often, they are unaware of their own strengths until someone helps them recognise them. A Talent Whisperer helps children see and name these inner qualities, giving them confidence in who they are and helping build self-awareness, resilience and a positive self-image — essential foundations for lifelong learning.

This approach connects naturally with OIS values:

  • We have an inquisitive mind — encouraging children to explore what makes them curious and alive;
  • We are communicative and collaborative learners — helping children express their strengths and recognise them in others;
  • We are internationally minded citizens — valuing the diverse talents each child brings into our multicultural community.

As an international school where many cultures, languages and perspectives come together, talent-based education is especially meaningful. It allows us to look beyond academic outcomes alone and recognise each child in the fullness of who they are.

“As we grow into Optimist International Academy, we are shaping a learning culture that values the whole child. The Talent Whisperer approach fits beautifully with our vision of education — nurturing curiosity, resilience and the inner strengths that children carry with them for life.”
Anne-Marie van Holst, Director

Becoming a Talent Whisperer School means that this philosophy will increasingly become part of daily life at OIS — and soon at OIA. Talent conversations, reflective listening and strength-based guidance will help us continue building classrooms where every child feels seen, valued and empowered.

In the coming school year, families will begin to see this approach become more visible in classrooms, conversations and the way we help children reflect on their strengths.

We are proud of our staff for embracing this journey with such dedication, and excited for what this means for our students as we step into this new chapter together.
